How to Fix CVE-2024-2213

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Zenml dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

zenml fixed: 0.56.3
pip install zenml>=0.56.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show zenml

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2024-2213, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show zenml

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Zenml in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.56.3), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show zenml command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-287: Improper Authentication, where when an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. In Zenml, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An issue was discovered in zenml-io/zenml versions up to and including 0.55.4. Due to improper authentication mechanisms, an attacker with access to an active user session can change the account password without needing to know the current password. This vulnerability allows for unauthorized account takeover by bypassing the standard password change verification process. The issue was fixed in version 0.56.3.
