How to Fix CVE-2019-14867

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Ipa dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

ipa fixed: 4.6.7
pip install ipa>=4.6.7
ipa fixed: 4.7.4
pip install ipa>=4.7.4
ipa fixed: 4.8.3
pip install ipa>=4.8.3
freeipa fixed: 4.6.7
pip install freeipa>=4.6.7
freeipa fixed: 4.7.4
pip install freeipa>=4.7.4
freeipa fixed: 4.8.3
pip install freeipa>=4.8.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show ipa

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2019-14867, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show ipa

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Ipa in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.6.7), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show ipa command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Ipa, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

A flaw was found in IPA, all 4.6.x versions before 4.6.7, all 4.7.x versions before 4.7.4 and all 4.8.x versions before 4.8.3, in the way the internal function ber_scanf() was used in some components of the IPA server, which parsed kerberos key data. An unauthenticated attacker who could trigger parsing of the krb principal key could cause the IPA server to crash or in some conditions, cause arbitrary code to be executed on the server hosting the IPA server.
