How to Fix CVE-2019-10195

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Freeipa dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

freeipa fixed: 4.6.7
pip install freeipa>=4.6.7
freeipa fixed: 4.7.4
pip install freeipa>=4.7.4
freeipa fixed: 4.8.3
pip install freeipa>=4.8.3
ipa fixed: 4.6.7
pip install ipa>=4.6.7
ipa fixed: 4.7.4
pip install ipa>=4.7.4
ipa fixed: 4.8.3
pip install ipa>=4.8.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show freeipa

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2019-10195, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show freeipa

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Freeipa in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.6.7), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show freeipa command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor, where the product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. In Freeipa, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

A flaw was found in IPA, all 4.6.x versions before 4.6.7, all 4.7.x versions before 4.7.4 and all 4.8.x versions before 4.8.3, in the way that FreeIPA's batch processing API logged operations. This included passing user passwords in clear text on FreeIPA masters. Batch processing of commands with passwords as arguments or options is not performed by default in FreeIPA but is possible by third-party components. An attacker having access to system logs on FreeIPA masters could use this flaw to produce log file content with passwords exposed.
