How to Fix CVE-2025-48069

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2 dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2 fixed: 2.0.8
Upgrade github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2 to 2.0.8
ejson2env fixed: 2.0.8
Upgrade ejson2env to 2.0.8
github.com/Shopify/ejson2env fixed: Latest secure release
Upgrade github.com/Shopify/ejson2env to Latest secure release
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-48069, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2:

inspect dependencies for github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2 in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.0.8), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an os command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended os command when it is sent to a downstream component. In Github.com/Shopify/ejson2env/v2, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary The `ejson2env` tool has a vulnerability related to how it writes to `stdout`. Specifically, the tool is intended to write an export statement for environment variables and their values. However, due to inadequate output sanitization, there is a potential risk where variable names or values may include malicious content, resulting in additional unintended commands being output to `stdout`. If this output is improperly utilized in further command execution, it could lead to command injection vulnerabilities, allowing an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the host system. ### Details The vulnerability exists because environment variables are not properly sanitized during the decryption phase, which enables malicious keys or encrypted values to inject commands. ### Impact An attacker with control over `.ejson` files can inject commands in the environment where `source $(ejson2env)` or `eval ejson2env` are executed. ### Mitigation - Update to a version of `ejson2env` that sanitizes the output during decryption or - Do not use `ejson2env` to decrypt untrusted user secrets or - Do not evaluate or execute the direct output from `ejson2env` without removing nonprintable characters. ### Credit Thanks to security researcher [Demonia](https://hackerone.com/demonia?type=user) for reporting this issue.
