How to Fix CVE-2026-23520

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend fixed: 0.0.0-20260114065515-5a9c2f92e11f
Upgrade github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend to 0.0.0-20260114065515-5a9c2f92e11f
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-23520, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend:

inspect dependencies for github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.0.0-20260114065515-5a9c2f92e11f), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an os command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended os command when it is sent to a downstream component. In Github.com/getarcaneapp/arcane/backend, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Summary Arcane’s updater service supported lifecycle labels `com.getarcaneapp.arcane.lifecycle.pre-update` and `com.getarcaneapp.arcane.lifecycle.post-update` that allowed defining a command to run before or after a container update. The label value is passed directly to /bin/sh -c without sanitization or validation. Because any authenticated user (not limited to administrators) can create projects through the API, an attacker can create a project that specifies one of these lifecycle labels with a malicious command. When an administrator later triggers a container update (either manually or via scheduled update checks), Arcane reads the lifecycle label and executes its value as a shell command inside the container. If the container is configured with host volume mounts in its Compose definition, the executed command may be able to read from or write to the host filesystem through the mounted paths. This can enable data theft and, in some configurations, escalation to full host compromise (for example, if /var/run/docker.sock is mounted). ### Impact - Remote code execution (RCE) within the updated container context. - Host filesystem access when host volumes are mounted into the container. - Potential data exfiltration via outbound network requests or by exposing readable files. - Potential full host compromise if sensitive mounts are present (e.g., /var/run/docker.sock). ### Patches The lifecycle labels `com.getarcaneapp.arcane.lifecycle.pre-update` and `com.getarcaneapp.arcane.lifecycle.post-update` have been removed to eliminate this attack surface.
