How to Fix CVE-2025-58059

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Core dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

com.ritense.valtimo:core fixed: 12.16.0.RELEASE
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.ritense.valtimo</groupId>
    <artifactId>core</artifactId>
    <version>12.16.0.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
com.ritense.valtimo:core fixed: 13.1.2.RELEASE
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.ritense.valtimo</groupId>
    <artifactId>core</artifactId>
    <version>13.1.2.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.ritense.valtimo

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2025-58059, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.ritense.valtimo

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Core in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 12.16.0.RELEASE), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.ritense.valtimo command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an os command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended os command when it is sent to a downstream component. In Core, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Any admin that can create or modify and execute process-definitions could gain access to sensitive data or resources. This includes but is not limited to: - Running executables on the application host - Inspecting and extracting data from the host environment or application properties - Spring beans (application context, database pooling) ### Attack requirements The following conditions have to be met in order to perform this attack: - The user must be logged in - The user must have the admin role (ROLE_ADMIN), which is required to change process definitions - The user must have some knowledge about running scripts via a the Camunda/Operator engine ### Patches Version 12.16.0 and 13.1.2 have been patched. It is strongly advised to upgrade. ### Workarounds If no scripting is needed in any of the processes, it could be possible to disable it altogether via the `ProcessEngineConfiguration`: ``` @Component class NoScriptEnginePlugin : ProcessEnginePlugin { override fun preInit(processEngineConfiguration: ProcessEngineConfigurationImpl) {} override fun postInit(processEngineConfiguration: ProcessEngineConfigurationImpl) { processEngineConfiguration.scriptEngineResolver = null } override fun postProcessEngineBuild(processEngine: ProcessEngine) {} } ``` Warning: this workaround could lead to unexpected side-effects. Please test thoroughly. ### References - Valtimo 12 and lower: [Camunda Scripting](https://docs.camunda.org/manual/latest/user-guide/process-engine/scripting/#custom-scriptengineresolver) - Valtimo 13 and higher: [Operaton Scripting](https://docs.operaton.org/docs/documentation/user-guide/process-engine/scripting)
