How to Fix CVE-2026-62182

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected KubeEdge dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.21.2
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.21.2
github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.22.2
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.22.2
github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.23.1
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.23.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-62182, inspect your project dependencies for KubeEdge:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of KubeEdge in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.21.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an os command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended os command when it is sent to a downstream component. In KubeEdge, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Description KubeEdge ConfigUpdateJob processing was vulnerable to command injection on edge nodes. The `updateFields` values from a ConfigUpdateJob were concatenated into a command string and executed through a system shell. An authenticated user with sufficient permissions to create or update ConfigUpdateJob resources could include shell metacharacters in the supplied configuration fields and cause unintended commands to be executed on targeted edge nodes. ## Impact Successful exploitation could allow an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands on affected edge nodes with the privileges of the KubeEdge process handling the ConfigUpdateJob. The attacker must already have permission to create or modify ConfigUpdateJob resources and target an enrolled edge node. ## Patches The fix removes shell-based command construction and invokes `keadm config-update` using structured command arguments. The complete `--set` value is passed as a single literal argument, preventing shell metacharacters from being interpreted as commands. Fixes are planned for the following maintained releases: * v1.23.1 * v1.22.2 * v1.21.2 ## Workarounds Until a patched release is available: * restrict RBAC permissions for creating or modifying ConfigUpdateJob resources; * allow only trusted administrators to submit configuration update jobs; * avoid using ConfigUpdateJob in environments where its input cannot be fully trusted; * monitor ConfigUpdateJob resources and edge-node process activity for unexpected commands or changes. ## Credits KubeEdge thanks Sang-Hoon Choi ([KoreaSecurity](https://github.com/KoreaSecurity), Sejong University) for responsibly reporting this issue and for coordinating with the KubeEdge maintainers through the security disclosure process.
