How to Fix CVE-2020-10755

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Cinder dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

cinder fixed: 14.1.0
pip install cinder>=14.1.0
cinder fixed: 15.2.0
pip install cinder>=15.2.0
cinder fixed: 16.1.0
pip install cinder>=16.1.0
os-brick fixed: 2.8.6
pip install os-brick>=2.8.6
os-brick fixed: 2.10.4
pip install os-brick>=2.10.4
os-brick fixed: 3.0.2
pip install os-brick>=3.0.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show cinder

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2020-10755, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show cinder

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Cinder in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 14.1.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show cinder command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-522: Insufficiently Protected Credentials, where the product transmits or stores authentication credentials, but it uses an insecure method that is susceptible to unauthorized interception and/or retrieval. In Cinder, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An insecure-credentials flaw was found in all openstack-cinder versions before openstack-cinder 14.1.0, all openstack-cinder 15.x.x versions before openstack-cinder 15.2.0 and all openstack-cinder 16.x.x versions before openstack-cinder 16.1.0. When using openstack-cinder with the Dell EMC ScaleIO or VxFlex OS backend storage driver, credentials for the entire backend are exposed in the ``connection_info`` element in all Block Storage v3 Attachments API calls containing that element. This flaw enables an end-user to create a volume, make an API call to show the attachment detail information, and retrieve a username and password that may be used to connect to another user's volume. Additionally, these credentials are valid for the ScaleIO or VxFlex OS Management API, should an attacker discover the Management API endpoint. Source: OpenStack project
