How to Fix CVE-2023-29483

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Eventlet dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

eventlet fixed: 0.35.2
pip install eventlet>=0.35.2
dnspython fixed: 2.6.1
pip install dnspython>=2.6.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show eventlet

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2023-29483, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show eventlet

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Eventlet in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.35.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show eventlet command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-696: Incorrect Behavior Order, where the product performs multiple related behaviors, but the behaviors are performed in the wrong order in ways that may produce resultant weaknesses. In Eventlet, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

eventlet before 0.35.2, as used in dnspython before 2.6.0, allows remote attackers to interfere with DNS name resolution by quickly sending an invalid packet from the expected IP address and source port, aka a "TuDoor" attack. In other words, dnspython does not have the preferred behavior in which the DNS name resolution algorithm would proceed, within the full time window, in order to wait for a valid packet. NOTE: dnspython 2.6.0 is unusable for a different reason that was addressed in 2.6.1.
