How to Fix CVE-2021-30459

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Django debug toolbar dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

django-debug-toolbar fixed: 1.11.1
pip install django-debug-toolbar>=1.11.1
django-debug-toolbar fixed: 2.2.1
pip install django-debug-toolbar>=2.2.1
django-debug-toolbar fixed: 3.2.1
pip install django-debug-toolbar>=3.2.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show django-debug-toolbar

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2021-30459, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show django-debug-toolbar

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Django debug toolbar in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.11.1), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show django-debug-toolbar command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-89: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command ('SQL Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an sql command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended sql command when it is sent to a downstream component. without sufficient removal or quoting of sql syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated sql query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as sql instead of ordinary user data. In Django debug toolbar, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact With Django Debug Toolbar attackers are able to execute SQL by changing the `raw_sql` input of the SQL explain, analyze or select forms and submitting the form. **NOTE:** This is a high severity issue for anyone using the toolbar in a **production environment**. Generally the Django Debug Toolbar team only maintains the latest version of django-debug-toolbar, but an exception was made because of the high severity of this issue. ### Patches Please upgrade to one of the following versions, depending on the major version you're using: - Version 1.x: [django-debug-toolbar 1.11.1](https://pypi.org/project/django-debug-toolbar/1.11.1/) - Version 2.x: [django-debug-toolbar 2.2.1](https://pypi.org/project/django-debug-toolbar/2.2.1/) - Version 3.x: [django-debug-toolbar 3.2.1](https://pypi.org/project/django-debug-toolbar/3.2.1/) ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in the [django-debug-toolbar repo](https://github.com/jazzband/django-debug-toolbar/issues/new) (Please NO SENSITIVE INFORMATION, send an email instead!) * Email us at [security@jazzband.co](mailto:security@jazzband.co)
