How to Fix CVE-2018-3771

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Statics server dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

statics-server fixed: Latest secure release
npm install statics-server@Latest secure release
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls statics-server

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2018-3771, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls statics-server

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Statics server in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than the patched release), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls statics-server command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting'), where the product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. In Statics server, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An XSS in statics-server <= 0.0.9 can be used via injected iframe in the filename when statics-server displays directory index in the browser. Statics-server does not implement any HTML escaping when displays directory index in the browser. Variable `v` is used in `<a href>` element without escaping, which allows to embed HTML `<iframe>` tag with `src` attribute points to another HTML file in the directory. This file can contain malicious JavaScript code, which will be executed: ```js // ./node_modules/statics-server/index.js, line 18: if(fs.lstatSync(staticPath).isDirectory()){ var files=fs.readdirSync(staticPath); var lis=''; files.forEach((v,i)=>{ if(fs.lstatSync(path.resolve(staticPath,v)).isDirectory()){ lis+=`<li><a href="${req.url}${v}/">${v}/</a></li>`; }else { lis+=`<li><a href="${req.url}${v}">${v}</a></li>` } }); (...) ```
