How to Fix CVE-2026-61824

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Defuddle dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

defuddle fixed: 0.19.1
npm install defuddle@0.19.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls defuddle

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-61824, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls defuddle

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Defuddle in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.19.1), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls defuddle command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-116: Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output, where the product prepares a structured message for communication with another component, but encoding or escaping of the data is either missing or done incorrectly. as a result, the intended structure of the message is not preserved. In Defuddle, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Summary An Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation issue in the site extractor component allows an attacker-controlled attribute value to be injected into output HTML without escaping. An attacker who crafts a malicious HTML page or controls content on a matching domain can execute arbitrary scripts when a victim processes the page, resulting in Cross-Site Scripting (XSS). This affects defuddle through 0.19.0 and has been patched in version 0.19.1. ## Impact This vulnerability allows for Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) execution without needing to compromise external websites. Affected consumers include: - Obsidian Web Clipper, - web services serving the parsed output directly as HTML, and - any downstream application rendering the unsanitized HTML results ## Patch This issue has been patched in defuddle version 0.19.1. Users are encouraged to update to the latest release.
