Vulnerabilities in pkg:maven/org.mariadb/r2dbc-mariadb
PACKAGECVE-2026-55860 is a MODERATE (CVSS 5.9) r2dbc-mariadb vulnerable to cleartext password vulnerability (CWE-319: Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information) affecting R2dbc mariadb libraries in the Maven ecosystem. The issue involves r2dbc-mariadb vulnerable to cleartext password disclosure to a man-in-the-middle server (clear-text auth plugins not gated on a secure transport). Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 1.4.1.

Security Impact
CVSS: 5.9
The security impact metrics below are parsed directly from the CVSS v3.1 vector string (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
How to Fix CVE-2026-55860
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected R2dbc mariadb dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
<dependency>
<groupId>org.mariadb</groupId>
<artifactId>r2dbc-mariadb</artifactId>
<version>1.4.1</version>
</dependency>
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.mariadb
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2026-55860, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:
mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.mariadb
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of R2dbc mariadb in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.4.1), your application is affected.
Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.mariadb command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-319: Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information, where the product transmits sensitive or security-critical data in cleartext in a communication channel that can be sniffed by unauthorized actors. In R2dbc mariadb, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"summary" : "org.mariadb:r2dbc-mariadb vulnerable to cleartext password disclosure to a man-in-the-middle server (clear-text auth plugins not gated on a secure transport)",
"details" : "### Summary\n\nThe connector does not gate clear-text password authentication plugins on transport encryption. A hostile or man-in-the-middle MariaDB server can request a clear-text plugin over an unencrypted (plain-TCP) connection, and the driver responds with the user's password in cleartext on the wire.\n\n### Details\n\nThe driver does not require a secure transport before using clear-text-password authentication plugins. A hostile or man-in-the-middle server can issue an AuthSwitchRequest naming mysql_clear_password or dialog (PAM) over a plain-TCP, unencrypted connection, and the driver replies with the user's password as cleartext bytes on the wire.\n\nThe root cause is that the AuthenticationPlugin interface declares no capability for a plugin to require a secure connection. Because no such gate exists, clear-text plugins run regardless of whether the connection is encrypted.\n\n### Impact\n\nThe account password is transmitted in cleartext to the peer. An on-path attacker (MITM) who presents themselves as the server can capture the password during the authentication handshake. The disclosed credentials can subsequently be used to authenticate directly against the database server.\n\n### Patches\n\nFixed in 1.4.1. Clear-text authentication plugins (mysql_clear_password, dialog/PAM) now require a secure connection: the AuthenticationPlugin contract can declare that a plugin requires a secure transport, and such plugins are permitted only over an encrypted connection. Upgrade to 1.4.1 or later.\n\n### Workarounds\n\nUntil you can upgrade, configure certificate verification explicitly: provide the server/CA certificate and use a verifying SSL mode (e.g. VERIFY_CA / VERIFY_FULL) so the connection is encrypted and the server's identity is established before credentials are sent.\n\n### Credit\n\nReported by Yalguun Tumenkhuu ([@fg0x0](https://github.com/fg0x0/)).",
