How to Fix CVE-2024-22201

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Http2 common dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2024-22201, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Http2 common in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 9.4.54), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2 command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Http2 common, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact If an HTTP/2 connection gets TCP congested, when an idle timeout occurs the HTTP/2 session is marked as closed, and then a GOAWAY frame is queued to be written. However it is not written because the connection is TCP congested. When another idle timeout period elapses, it is then supposed to hard close the connection, but it delegates to the HTTP/2 session which reports that it has already been closed so it does not attempt to hard close the connection. This leaves the connection in ESTABLISHED state (i.e. not closed), TCP congested, and idle. An attacker can cause many connections to end up in this state, and the server may run out of file descriptors, eventually causing the server to stop accepting new connections from valid clients. The client may also be impacted (if the server does not read causing a TCP congestion), but the issue is more severe for servers. ### Patches Patched versions: * 9.4.54 * 10.0.20 * 11.0.20 * 12.0.6 ### Workarounds Disable HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 support until you can upgrade to a patched version of Jetty. HTTP/1.x is not affected. ### References * https://github.com/jetty/jetty.project/issues/11256.
