How to Fix CVE-2023-0100

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.eclipse.birt:org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer fixed: 4.13
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.eclipse.birt</groupId>
    <artifactId>org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer</artifactId>
    <version>4.13</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.birt

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2023-0100, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.birt

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.13), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.birt command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-20: Improper Input Validation, where the product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. In Org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In Eclipse BIRT, starting from version 2.6.2, the default configuration allowed to retrieve a report from the same host using an absolute HTTP path for the report parameter (e.g. __report=http://xyz.com/report.rptdesign). If the host indicated in the __report parameter matched the HTTP Host header value, the report would be retrieved. However, the Host header can be tampered with on some configurations where no virtual hosts are put in place (e.g. in the default configuration of Apache Tomcat) or when the default host points to the BIRT server. This vulnerability was patched on Eclipse BIRT 4.13.
