How to Fix CVE-2022-24721

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Cometd java oort dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.cometd.java:cometd-java-oort fixed: 5.0.11
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.cometd.java</groupId>
    <artifactId>cometd-java-oort</artifactId>
    <version>5.0.11</version>
</dependency>
org.cometd.java:cometd-java-oort fixed: 6.0.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.cometd.java</groupId>
    <artifactId>cometd-java-oort</artifactId>
    <version>6.0.6</version>
</dependency>
org.cometd.java:cometd-java-oort fixed: 7.0.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.cometd.java</groupId>
    <artifactId>cometd-java-oort</artifactId>
    <version>7.0.6</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cometd.java

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2022-24721, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cometd.java

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Cometd java oort in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.0.11), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cometd.java command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In Cometd java oort, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Internal usage of Oort and Seti channels is improperly authorized, so any remote user could subscribe and publish to those channels. By subscribing to those channels, a remote user may be able to watch cluster-internal traffic that contains other user's (possibly sensitive) data. By publishing to those channels, a remote user may be able to create/modify/delete other user's data and modify the cluster structure. The issue impacts any version up to 5.0.10, 6.0.5 and 7.0.5. ### Patches The issue has been fixed in 5.0.11, 6.0.6 and 7.0.6. ### Workarounds The workaround is to install a custom `SecurityPolicy` that forbids subscription and publishing to remote, non-Oort, sessions on Oort and Seti channels. This workaround could be implemented in any affected version. ### References cometd/cometd#1146 ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Email us at [security@webtide.com](mailto:security@webtide.com) ### Credits https://www.redteam-pentesting.de/
