How to Fix CVE-2018-11802

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Solr parent dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.apache.solr:solr-parent fixed: 7.7.0
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
    <artifactId>solr-parent</artifactId>
    <version>7.7.0</version>
</dependency>
org.apache.solr:solr-parent fixed: 6.6.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
    <artifactId>solr-parent</artifactId>
    <version>6.6.6</version>
</dependency>
org.apache.solr:solr-core fixed: 7.7.0
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
    <artifactId>solr-core</artifactId>
    <version>7.7.0</version>
</dependency>
org.apache.solr:solr-core fixed: 6.6.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
    <artifactId>solr-core</artifactId>
    <version>6.6.6</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.solr

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2018-11802, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.solr

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Solr parent in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 7.7.0), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.solr command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In Solr parent, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In Apache Solr, the cluster can be partitioned into multiple collections and only a subset of nodes actually host any given collection. However, if a node receives a request for a collection it does not host, it proxies the request to a relevant node and serves the request. Solr bypasses all authorization settings for such requests. This affects all Solr versions prior to 6.6.6 and 7.7 that use the default authorization mechanism of Solr (RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin).
