How to Fix CVE-2025-68931

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Jervis dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

net.gleske:jervis fixed: 2.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>net.gleske</groupId>
    <artifactId>jervis</artifactId>
    <version>2.2</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=net.gleske

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2025-68931, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=net.gleske

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Jervis in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.2), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=net.gleske command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-287: Improper Authentication, where when an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. In Jervis, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Vulnerability https://github.com/samrocketman/jervis/blob/157d2b63ffa5c4bb1d8ee2254950fd2231de2b05/src/main/groovy/net/gleske/jervis/tools/SecurityIO.groovy#L682-L684 https://github.com/samrocketman/jervis/blob/157d2b63ffa5c4bb1d8ee2254950fd2231de2b05/src/main/groovy/net/gleske/jervis/tools/SecurityIO.groovy#L720-L722 `AES/CBC/PKCS5Padding` lacks authentication, making it vulnerable to padding oracle attacks and ciphertext manipulation. ### Impact Severity is considered low for internal uses of this library but if there's any consumer using these methods directly then this is considered critical. Unlikely to matter due to the design of how AES-256-CBC is used in conjunction with RSA and SHA-256 checksum within Jervis. Jervis uses RSA to encrypt AES keys and a SHA-256 checksum of the encrypted data in local-only storage inaccessible from the web. After asymmetric decryption and before symmetric decryption, a SHA-256 checksum is performed on the metadata and encrypted data. All encrypted data is discarded if the checksum does not match without attempting to decrypt since the encrypted data is assumed invalid. The data stored is GitHub App authentication tokens which will expire within one hour. ### Patches Jervis patch will migrate from `AES/CBC/PKCS5Padding` to `AES/GCM/NoPadding`. Upgrade to Jervis 2.2. ### Workarounds None ### References - [Padding Oracle Attacks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padding_oracle_attack)
