How to Fix CVE-2024-2700

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Quarkus core dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

io.quarkus:quarkus-core fixed: 3.9.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>io.quarkus</groupId>
    <artifactId>quarkus-core</artifactId>
    <version>3.9.2</version>
</dependency>
io.quarkus:quarkus-core fixed: 3.8.4
<dependency>
    <groupId>io.quarkus</groupId>
    <artifactId>quarkus-core</artifactId>
    <version>3.8.4</version>
</dependency>
io.quarkus:quarkus-core fixed: 3.2.12.Final
<dependency>
    <groupId>io.quarkus</groupId>
    <artifactId>quarkus-core</artifactId>
    <version>3.2.12.Final</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=io.quarkus

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2024-2700, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=io.quarkus

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Quarkus core in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.9.2), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=io.quarkus command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-526: Cleartext Storage of Sensitive Information in an Environment Variable, where the product uses an environment variable to store unencrypted sensitive information. In Quarkus core, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

A vulnerability was found in the quarkus-core component. Quarkus captures the local environment variables from the Quarkus namespace during the application's build. Thus, running the resulting application inherits the values captured at build time. However, some local environment variables may have been set by the developer / CI environment for testing purposes, such as dropping the database during the application startup or trusting all TLS certificates to accept self-signed certificates. If these properties are configured using environment variables or the .env facility, they are captured into the built application. It may lead to dangerous behavior if the application does not override these values. This behavior only happens for configuration properties from the `quarkus.*` namespace. So, application-specific properties are not captured.
