How to Fix CVE-2019-10753

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Spotless eclipse wtp dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

com.diffplug.spotless:spotless-eclipse-wtp fixed: 3.9.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.diffplug.spotless</groupId>
    <artifactId>spotless-eclipse-wtp</artifactId>
    <version>3.9.6</version>
</dependency>
com.diffplug.spotless:spotless-eclipse-cdt fixed: 9.4.4
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.diffplug.spotless</groupId>
    <artifactId>spotless-eclipse-cdt</artifactId>
    <version>9.4.4</version>
</dependency>
com.diffplug.spotless:spotless-eclipse-groovy fixed: 3.0.1
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.diffplug.spotless</groupId>
    <artifactId>spotless-eclipse-groovy</artifactId>
    <version>3.0.1</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.diffplug.spotless

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2019-10753, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.diffplug.spotless

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Spotless eclipse wtp in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.9.6), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.diffplug.spotless command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-669: Incorrect Resource Transfer Between Spheres, where the product does not properly transfer a resource/behavior to another sphere, or improperly imports a resource/behavior from another sphere, in a manner that provides unintended control over that resource. In Spotless eclipse wtp, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In all versions prior to version 3.9.6 for eclipse-wtp, all versions prior to version 9.4.4 for eclipse-cdt, and all versions prior to version 3.0.1 for eclipse-groovy, Spotless was resolving dependencies over an insecure channel (http). If the build occurred over an insecure connection, a malicious user could have perform a Man-in-the-Middle attack during the build and alter the build artifacts that were produced. In case that any of these artifacts were compromised, any developers using these could be altered. **Note:** In order to validate that this artifact was not compromised, the maintainer would need to confirm that none of the artifacts published to the registry were not altered with. Until this happens, we can not guarantee that this artifact was not compromised even though the probability that this happened is low.
