How to Fix CVE-2023-37896

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2 dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2 fixed: 2.9.9
Upgrade github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2 to 2.9.9
github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei fixed: 2.9.9
Upgrade github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei to 2.9.9
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2023-37896, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2:

inspect dependencies for github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2 in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.9.9), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'), where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In Github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/v2, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Overview We have identified and addressed a security issue in the Nuclei project that affected users utilizing Nuclei as **Go code (SDK)** running **custom templates**. This issue did not affect CLI users. The problem was related to sanitization issues with payloads loading in `sandbox` mode. ## Details In the previous versions, there was a potential risk with payloads loading in sandbox mode. The issue occurred due to relative paths not being converted to absolute paths before doing the check for `sandbox` flag allowing arbitrary files to be read on the filesystem in certain cases when using Nuclei from `Go` SDK implementation. This issue has been fixed in the latest release, v2.9.9. We have also enabled sandbox by default for filesystem loading. This can be optionally disabled if required. The `-sandbox` option has been **deprecated** and is now divided into two new options: `-lfa` (allow local file access) which is disabled by default and `-lna` (restrict local network access) which can be optionally disabled by user. The `-lfa` allows file (payload) access anywhere on the system (disabling sandbox effectively), and `-lna` blocks connections to the local/private network. ## Affected Versions This issue affected all versions of Nuclei prior to v2.9.9. ## Patches We recommend all users upgrade to the latest version, [v2.9.9](https://github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/releases/tag/v2.9.9), which includes the security fix. ### References - [patch](https://github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/pull/3927) - [releases](https://github.com/projectdiscovery/nuclei/releases/tag/v2.9.9) ## Acknowledgments We would like to thank **keomutchoiboi** who reported this issue to us via our security email, [security@projectdiscovery.io](mailto:security@projectdiscovery.io). We appreciate the responsible disclosure of this issue.
