How to Fix CVE-2026-54250

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected K3s dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/k3s-io/k3s fixed: 1.35.3
Upgrade github.com/k3s-io/k3s to 1.35.3
github.com/k3s-io/k3s fixed: 1.34.6
Upgrade github.com/k3s-io/k3s to 1.34.6
github.com/k3s-io/k3s fixed: 1.33.10
Upgrade github.com/k3s-io/k3s to 1.33.10
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/k3s-io/k3s

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-54250, inspect your project dependencies for K3s:

inspect dependencies for github.com/k3s-io/k3s

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of K3s in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.35.3), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'), where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In K3s, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

#### Summary A path traversal vulnerability exists in K3s's etcd snapshot decompression functionality. Zip files containing archive members with maliciously crafted names (e.g., `../../../../etc/password`) can be written to arbitrary locations on the filesystem when an administrator restores the archive as a compressed etcd snapshot. #### Mitigations * Enable golang's built-in [insecure path protections](https://pkg.go.dev/archive/zip#NewReader) when restoring snapshots by setting the`GODEBUG` environment variable: ```bash GODEBUG=zipinsecurepath=0 k3s server --cluster-reset --cluster-reset-restore-path=/path/to/snapshot.zip ``` * Manually extract the snapshot from the zip archive before restoring it. If the snapshot to be restored does not end with `.zip`, the vulnerable extraction code will not be executed. #### Additional Notes Administrators should be aware of the cautions noted in the "Security" section of the documentation on [Restoring Snapshots](https://docs.k3s.io/cli/etcd-snapshot#security).
