CVE-2026-85024: Undici Denial of Service Vulnerability
MODERATECVE-2026-85024 is a MODERATE (CVSS 5.9) denial of service vulnerability (CWE-248: Uncaught Exception) affecting Undici libraries in the npm ecosystem. The issue involves undici vulnerable to denial of service via unhandled error in websocket permessage-deflate decompression. Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 6.28.1, 7.29.1, 8.10.2.

Security Impact
CVSS: 5.9
The security impact metrics below are parsed directly from the CVSS v3.1 vector string (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
How to Fix CVE-2026-85024
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Undici dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
npm install undici@6.28.1
npm install undici@7.29.1
npm install undici@8.10.2
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
npm ls undici
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-85024, inspect your project dependencies using npm:
npm ls undici
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Undici in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 6.28.1), your application is affected.
Note: The npm ls undici command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-248: Uncaught Exception, where an exception is thrown from a function, but it is not caught. In Undici, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"summary" : "undici vulnerable to Denial of Service via unhandled error in WebSocket permessage-deflate decompression",
"details" : "## Impact\n\nundici's WebSocket client (including Node.js's bundled `globalThis.WebSocket`) crashes the entire Node.js process when a remote WebSocket peer sends a permessage-deflate compressed message that crosses the decompressed-payload size limit and then contains a malformed DEFLATE block. In `lib/web/websocket/permessage-deflate.js`, the size-limit cleanup calls `removeAllListeners()` on the internal zlib `InflateRaw`, removing its `error` listener, but leaves the stream running. The inflater then emits a `Z_DATA_ERROR` with no listener attached, which Node.js treats as a fatal unhandled `error` event and terminates the process. Application `error`/`close` handlers on the public WebSocket cannot observe or prevent this, because the failing object is the internal `InflateRaw`.\n\nA malicious or compromised WebSocket server can crash a client with a single connection, unauthenticated and without any application mistake. The attack is asymmetric (about 130 KB on the wire expands past the limit) and can be repeated on reconnect (crash loop).\n\nAffected applications are those using the undici WebSocket client (`new WebSocket(...)`) or Node.js's bundled `globalThis.WebSocket` that can be induced to connect to an attacker-controlled or compromised WebSocket endpoint.\n\n## Patches\n\nUpgrade to undici v6.28.1, v7.29.1 or v8.10.2.\n\n## Workarounds\n\nNo workaround is available.",
