How to Fix CVE-2026-77063

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Multer dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

multer fixed: 2.3.0
npm install multer@2.3.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls multer

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-77063, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls multer

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Multer in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.3.0), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls multer command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-362: Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition'), where the product contains a concurrent code sequence that requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence operating concurrently. In Multer, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact When `multer` is configured with an asynchronous `fileFilter`, the `limits.fileSize` limit can be bypassed. The `'limit'` event is registered inside the async `fileFilter` callback, so if a file exceeds `limits.fileSize` before that callback runs, the event is missed and the oversized upload is accepted instead of being rejected with a `LIMIT_FILE_SIZE` error. Applications that rely on `limits.fileSize` to reject oversized uploads are affected on all upload methods (`.single()`, `.array()`, `.fields()`, `.any()`). Uploads using a synchronous `fileFilter` are not affected. ### Patches Users should upgrade to `2.3.0`. ### Workarounds Use a synchronous `fileFilter`, or validate the uploaded file size after the upload completes.
