How to Fix CVE-2026-53673

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected BuddyPress dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

buddypress/buddypress fixed: 14.5.0
Upgrade buddypress/buddypress to 14.5.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for buddypress/buddypress

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-53673, inspect your project dependencies for BuddyPress:

inspect dependencies for buddypress/buddypress

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of BuddyPress in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 14.5.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-639: Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key, where the system's authorization functionality does not prevent one user from gaining access to another user's data or record by modifying the key value identifying the data. In BuddyPress, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

BuddyPress 14.4.0 contains an insecure direct object reference vulnerability in the messages REST API that allows authenticated attackers to access arbitrary private message threads by supplying a user_id parameter in the request. Attackers can pass another user's identifier to the get_item_permissions_check method, which validates the supplied user_id instead of the logged-in user and is reused by the update and delete handlers, to read, reply to, or delete any user's private messages.
