How to Fix CVE-2026-44798

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Nautobot dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

nautobot fixed: 3.1.2
pip install nautobot>=3.1.2
nautobot fixed: 2.4.33
pip install nautobot>=2.4.33
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show nautobot

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2026-44798, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show nautobot

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Nautobot in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.1.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show nautobot command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-749: Exposed Dangerous Method or Function, where the product provides an applications programming interface (api) or similar interface for interaction with external actors, but the interface includes a dangerous method or function that is not properly restricted. In Nautobot, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact A user with access to add/change a GitRepository record could use the REST API to directly set the `current_head` field on the record, which was not intended to be user-editable. Doing so could cause Nautobot's local clone(s) of the relevant repository to checkout a commit other than the latest commit on the specified `branch` (resulting in misleading state), or potentially to be unable to make use of the repository at all (until manually remediated) due to the `current_head` pointing to a nonexistent commit hash or malformed value. ### Patches The issue has been remediated in Nautobot v2.4.33 and 3.1.2. ### Workarounds Note that many of the same end-result symptoms could be caused by a user with the same level of access simply changing the `branch` or `remote_url` of a GitRepository rather than crafting the `current_head`. Administrators are encouraged to carefully review which users are granted permissions to create and modify GitRepository records. ### References - 2.4.33 (<a href="https://github.com/nautobot/nautobot/commit/9deddfc91ad9260ad17b5e20084e9e2d15be3609">patch</a>) - 3.1.2 (<a href="https://github.com/nautobot/nautobot/commit/c46f97040b2bde4320be36b23577f19a8bcbd8c3">patch</a>)
