How to Fix CVE-2026-44394

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Keystone dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

keystone fixed: 27.0.2
pip install keystone>=27.0.2
keystone fixed: 28.0.2
pip install keystone>=28.0.2
keystone fixed: 29.0.2
pip install keystone>=29.0.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show keystone

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2026-44394, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show keystone

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Keystone in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 27.0.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show keystone command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In Keystone, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Keystone before 29.0.2. The Keystone federated token rescoping mechanism does not propagate the original token's expiry to the newly issued token. When a federated user rescopes a token via POST /v3/auth/tokens, the handle_scoped_token() function in the mapped authentication plugin returns response data without an expires_at value. The token provider falls back to issuing a token with a fresh default TTL. By rescoping repeatedly before each token expires, a user can maintain access indefinitely, bypassing operator-configured token lifetime policies. This is a variant of CVE-2012-3426. Only deployments using federated identity (SAML2, OpenID Connect) are affected.
