How to Fix CVE-2026-33628

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Invoiceninja/invoiceninja dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

invoiceninja/invoiceninja fixed: 5.13.4
Upgrade invoiceninja/invoiceninja to 5.13.4
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for invoiceninja/invoiceninja

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-33628, inspect your project dependencies for Invoiceninja/invoiceninja:

inspect dependencies for invoiceninja/invoiceninja

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Invoiceninja/invoiceninja in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.13.4), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-116: Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output, where the product prepares a structured message for communication with another component, but encoding or escaping of the data is either missing or done incorrectly. as a result, the intended structure of the message is not preserved. In Invoiceninja/invoiceninja, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Vulnerability Details Invoice line item descriptions in Invoice Ninja v5.13.0 bypass the XSS denylist filter, allowing stored XSS payloads to execute when invoices are rendered in the PDF preview or client portal. The line item description field was not passed through `purify::clean()` before rendering. ## Steps to Reproduce 1. Login as any authenticated user 2. Create or edit an invoice 3. In a line item description, enter: `<img src=x onerror=alert(document.cookie)>` 4. Save the invoice and preview it 5. The XSS payload executes in the browser ## Impact - **Attacker**: Any authenticated user who can create invoices - **Victim**: Any user viewing the invoice (including clients via the portal) - **Specific damage**: Session hijacking, account takeover, data exfiltration ## Proposed Fix Fixed in v5.13.4 by the vendor by adding `purify::clean()` to sanitize line item descriptions.
