How to Fix CVE-2026-33551

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected OpenStack Keystone dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

keystone fixed: 26.1.1
pip install keystone>=26.1.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show keystone

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2026-33551, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show keystone

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of OpenStack Keystone in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 26.1.1), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show keystone command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In OpenStack Keystone, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Keystone 14 through 26 before 26.1.1, 27.0.0, 28.0.0, and 29.0.0. Restricted application credentials can create EC2 credentials. By using a restricted application credential to call the EC2 credential creation API, an authenticated user with only a reader role may obtain an EC2/S3 credential that carries the full set of the parent user's S3 permissions, effectively bypassing the role restrictions imposed on the application credential. Only deployments that use restricted application credentials in combination with the EC2/S3 compatibility API (swift3 / s3api) are affected.
