How to Fix CVE-2026-33343

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected etcd dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 fixed: 3.6.9
Upgrade go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 to 3.6.9
go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 fixed: 3.5.28
Upgrade go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 to 3.5.28
go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 fixed: 3.4.42
Upgrade go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 to 3.4.42
go.etcd.io/etcd fixed: Latest secure release
Upgrade go.etcd.io/etcd to Latest secure release
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for go.etcd.io/etcd/v3

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-33343, inspect your project dependencies for etcd:

inspect dependencies for go.etcd.io/etcd/v3

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of etcd in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.6.9), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In etcd, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact _What kind of vulnerability is it? Who is impacted?_ An authenticated user with RBAC restricted permissions on key ranges can use nested transactions to bypass all key-level authorization. This allows any authenticated user with direct access to etcd to effectively ignore all key range restrictions, accessing the entire etcd data store. Kubernetes does not rely on etcd’s built-in authentication and authorization. Instead, the API server handles authentication and authorization itself, so typical Kubernetes deployments are not affected. ### Patches _Has the problem been patched? What versions should users upgrade to?_ This vulnerability is patched in the following versions: * etcd 3.6.9 * etcd 3.5.28 * etcd 3.4.42 ### Workarounds _Is there a way for users to fix or remediate the vulnerability without upgrading?_ If upgrading is not immediately possible, reduce exposure by treating the affected RPCs as unauthenticated in practice. * restrict network access to etcd server ports so only trusted components can connect * require strong client identity at the transport layer, such as mTLS with tightly scoped client certificate distribution ### Reporters _Our community helps keep etcd secure_ SIG-Etcd thanks community members Luke Francis and Battulga Byambaa for reporting this vulnerability.
