How to Fix CVE-2026-2229

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Undici dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

undici fixed: 6.24.0
npm install undici@6.24.0
undici fixed: 7.24.0
npm install undici@7.24.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls undici

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-2229, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls undici

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Undici in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 6.24.0), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls undici command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-248: Uncaught Exception, where an exception is thrown from a function, but it is not caught. In Undici, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The undici WebSocket client is vulnerable to a denial-of-service attack due to improper validation of the `server_max_window_bits` parameter in the permessage-deflate extension. When a WebSocket client connects to a server, it automatically advertises support for permessage-deflate compression. A malicious server can respond with an out-of-range `server_max_window_bits` value (outside zlib's valid range of 8-15). When the server subsequently sends a compressed frame, the client attempts to create a zlib InflateRaw instance with the invalid windowBits value, causing a synchronous RangeError exception that is not caught, resulting in immediate process termination. The vulnerability exists because: 1. The `isValidClientWindowBits()` function only validates that the value contains ASCII digits, not that it falls within the valid range 8-15 2. The `createInflateRaw()` call is not wrapped in a try-catch block 3. The resulting exception propagates up through the call stack and crashes the Node.js process ### Patches _Has the problem been patched?
