How to Fix CVE-2025-65956

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Getformwork/formwork dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

getformwork/formwork fixed: 2.2.0
Upgrade getformwork/formwork to 2.2.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for getformwork/formwork

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-65956, inspect your project dependencies for Getformwork/formwork:

inspect dependencies for getformwork/formwork

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Getformwork/formwork in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.2.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting'), where the product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. In Getformwork/formwork, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary Inserting unsanitized data into the blog tag field in Formwork CMS results in stored cross‑site scripting (XSS). Any user with credentials to the Formwork CMS who accesses or edits an affected blog post will have attacker‑controlled script executed in their browser. Because the issue is persistent and impacts privileged administrative workflows, the severity is elevated. ### Details Formwork CMS fails to properly sanitize data inserted into tags, before saving them and rendering them into the edit blog interface. When a specially crafted tag becomes saved as a tag into the system, it is unable to be removed. Any attempt to remove the tag from the affected post, causes the XSS to trigger once again. Additionally, once the malicious tag is present, managing standard tags becomes impossible. This is due to script execution on attempted modification. This leads to a form of interface lockout where the payload continually reinserts itself due to the stored, unsafe rendering. ### Impact This is a stored cross‑site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. This impacts all users who access the affected blog post’s edit page. ### Patches [Formwork 2.2.0](https://github.com/getformwork/formwork/releases/tag/2.2.0) ensures proper escaping of user input in tag fields.
