How to Fix CVE-2025-53884

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/neuvector/neuvector dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/neuvector/neuvector fixed: 0.0.0-20250825191744-da1a462074c3
Upgrade github.com/neuvector/neuvector to 0.0.0-20250825191744-da1a462074c3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/neuvector/neuvector

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-53884, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/neuvector/neuvector:

inspect dependencies for github.com/neuvector/neuvector

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/neuvector/neuvector in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.0.0-20250825191744-da1a462074c3), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-759: Use of a One-Way Hash without a Salt, where the product uses a one-way cryptographic hash against an input that should not be reversible, such as a password, but the product does not also use a salt as part of the input. In Github.com/neuvector/neuvector, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact NeuVector stores user passwords and API keys using a simple, unsalted hash. This method is vulnerable to rainbow table attack (offline attack where hashes of known passwords are precomputed). NeuVector generates a cryptographically secure, random 16-character salt and uses it with the PBKDF2 algorithm to create the hash value for the following actions: - Creating a user - Updating a user’s password - Creating an API key **Note:** After upgrading to NeuVector 5.4.6, users must log in again so that NeuVector can regenerate the password hash. For API keys, you must send at least one request per API key to regenerate its hash value. ### Patches This issue is fixed in NeuVector version **5.4.6** and later. ### Workarounds There is no workaround. Upgrade to a patched version of NeuVector as soon as possible. ### References If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: - Reach out to the [SUSE Rancher Security team](https://github.com/rancher/rancher/security/policy) for security related inquiries. - Open an issue in the [NeuVector](https://github.com/neuvector/neuvector/issues/new/choose) repository. - Verify with our [support matrix](https://www.suse.com/suse-neuvector/support-matrix/all-supported-versions/neuvector-v-all-versions/) and [product support lifecycle](https://www.suse.com/lifecycle/#suse-security).
