How to Fix CVE-2025-29953

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ fixed: 2.1.1
Upgrade Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ to 2.1.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-29953, inspect your project dependencies for Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ:

inspect dependencies for Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.1.1), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-502: Deserialization of Untrusted Data, where the product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently ensuring that the resulting data will be valid. In Apache.NMS.ActiveMQ, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Deserialization of Untrusted Data vulnerability in Apache ActiveMQ NMS OpenWire Client. This issue affects Apache ActiveMQ NMS OpenWire Client before 2.1.1 when performing connections to untrusted servers. Such servers could abuse the unbounded deserialization in the client to provide malicious responses that may eventually cause arbitrary code execution on the client. Version 2.1.0 introduced a allow/denylist feature to restrict deserialization, but this feature could be bypassed. The .NET team has deprecated the built-in .NET binary serialization feature starting with .NET 9 and suggests migrating away from binary serialization. The project is considering to follow suit and drop this part of the NMS API altogether. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.1.1, which fixes the issue. We also recommend to migrate away from relying on .NET binary serialization as a hardening method for the future.
