CVE-2025-29770: Vllm Denial of Service Vulnerability
MODERATECVE-2025-29770 is a MODERATE (CVSS 6.5) denial of service vulnerability (CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) affecting Vllm libraries in the PyPI ecosystem. The issue involves vllm denial of service via outlines unbounded cache on disk. Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 0.8.0.

Security Impact
CVSS: 6.5
The security impact metrics below are parsed directly from the CVSS v3.1 vector string (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
How to Fix CVE-2025-29770
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Vllm dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
pip install vllm>=0.8.0
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
pip show vllm
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2025-29770, inspect your installed packages using pip:
pip show vllm
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Vllm in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.8.0), your application is affected.
Note: The pip show vllm command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling, where the product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any intended restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated. In Vllm, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"details" : "### Impact\nThe [outlines](https://dottxt-ai.github.io/outlines/latest/) library is one of the backends used by vLLM to support structured output (a.k.a. guided decoding). Outlines provides an optional cache for its compiled grammars on the local filesystem. This cache has been on by default in vLLM. Outlines is also available by default through the OpenAI compatible API server.\n\nThe affected code in vLLM is [vllm/model_executor/guided_decoding/outlines_logits_processors.py](https://github.com/vllm-project/vllm/blob/53be4a863486d02bd96a59c674bbec23eec508f6/vllm/model_executor/guided_decoding/outlines_logits_processors.py), which unconditionally uses the cache from outlines. vLLM should have this off by default and allow administrators to opt-in due to the potential for abuse.\n\nA malicious user can send a stream of very short decoding requests with unique schemas, resulting in an addition to the cache for each request. This can result in a Denial of Service if the filesystem runs out of space.\n\nNote that even if vLLM was configured to use a different backend by default, it is still possible to choose outlines on a per-request basis using the `guided_decoding_backend` key of the `extra_body` field of the request.\n\nThis issue applies to the V0 engine only. The V1 engine is not affected.\n\n### Patches\n\n* https://github.com/vllm-project/vllm/pull/14837\n\nThe fix is to disable this cache by default since it does not provide an option to limit its size. If you want to use this cache anyway, you may set the `VLLM_V0_USE_OUTLINES_CACHE` environment variable to `1`.\n\n### Workarounds\n\nThere is no way to workaround this issue in existing versions of vLLM other than preventing untrusted access to the OpenAI compatible API server.\n\n### References",
