CVE-2024-35198: Torchserve TorchServe Vulnerable To Bypass Of Vulnerability
CRITICALCVE-2024-35198 is a CRITICAL (CVSS 9.8) torchserve vulnerable to bypass of vulnerability (CWE-706: Use of Incorrectly-Resolved Name or Reference) affecting Torchserve libraries in the PyPI ecosystem. The issue involves torchserve vulnerable to bypass of allowed_urls configuration. Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 0.11.0.
CVE-2024-35198 at a Glance
Security Impact
CVSS: 9.8
The security impact metrics below are parsed directly from the CVSS v3.1 vector string (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
How to Fix CVE-2024-35198
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Torchserve dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
pip install torchserve>=0.11.0
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
pip show torchserve
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2024-35198, inspect your installed packages using pip:
pip show torchserve
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Torchserve in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.11.0), your application is affected.
Note: The pip show torchserve command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-706: Use of Incorrectly-Resolved Name or Reference, where the product uses a name or reference to access a resource, but the name/reference resolves to a resource that is outside of the intended control sphere. In Torchserve, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"details" : "### Impact\nTorchServe's check on allowed_urls configuration can be by-passed if the URL contains characters such as \"..\" but it does not prevent the model from being downloaded into the model store. Once a file is downloaded, it can be referenced without providing a URL the second time, which effectively bypasses the allowed_urls security check. Customers using PyTorch inference Deep Learning Containers (DLC) through Amazon SageMaker and EKS are not affected.\n\n### Patches\nThis issue in TorchServe has been fixed by validating the URL without characters such as \"..\" before downloading: [#3082](https://github.com/pytorch/serve/pull/3082).\n\nTorchServe release 0.11.0 includes the fix to address this vulnerability.\n\n### References\n* [#3082](https://github.com/pytorch/serve/pull/3082)\n* [TorchServe release v0.11.0](https://github.com/pytorch/serve/releases/tag/v0.11.0)\n\nThank Kroll Cyber Risk for for responsibly disclosing this issue.\n\nIf you have any questions or comments about this advisory, we ask that you contact AWS Security via our [vulnerability reporting page](https://aws.amazon.com/security/vulnerability-reporting) or directly via email to [aws-security@amazon.com](mailto:aws-security@amazon.com).
