How to Fix CVE-2024-24570

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Statamic/cms dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

statamic/cms fixed: 4.46.0
Upgrade statamic/cms to 4.46.0
statamic/cms fixed: 3.4.17
Upgrade statamic/cms to 3.4.17
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for statamic/cms

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2024-24570, inspect your project dependencies for Statamic/cms:

inspect dependencies for statamic/cms

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Statamic/cms in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.46.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-80: Improper Neutralization of Script-Related HTML Tags in a Web Page (Basic XSS), where the product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. In Statamic/cms, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact HTML files crafted to look like jpg files are able to be uploaded, allowing for XSS. This affects: - front-end forms with asset fields without any mime type validation - asset fields in the control panel - asset browser in the control panel Additionally, if the XSS is crafted in a specific way, the "copy password reset link" feature may be exploited to gain access to a user's password reset token and gain access to their account. The authorized user is required to execute the XSS in order for the vulnerability to occur. ### Patches In versions 4.46.0 and 3.4.17, the XSS vulnerability has been patched, and the copy password reset link functionality has been disabled. (Users may still trigger password reset emails.) ### Credits Statamic thanks Niklas Schilling (discovery, analysis, coordination) from the SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab (https://www.sec-consult.com/) for responsibly reporting the identified issues and working with us as we addressed them.
