How to Fix CVE-2023-50767

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Nexus jenkins plugin dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.sonatype.nexus.ci:nexus-jenkins-plugin fixed: 3.18.1-01
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.sonatype.nexus.ci</groupId>
    <artifactId>nexus-jenkins-plugin</artifactId>
    <version>3.18.1-01</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.sonatype.nexus.ci

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2023-50767, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.sonatype.nexus.ci

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Nexus jenkins plugin in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.18.1-01), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.sonatype.nexus.ci command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-862: Missing Authorization, where the product does not perform an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action. In Nexus jenkins plugin, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Jenkins Nexus Platform Plugin 3.18.0-03 and earlier does not perform permission checks in methods implementing form validation. This allows attackers with Overall/Read permission to send an HTTP request to an attacker-specified URL and parse the response as XML. Additionally, the plugin does not configure its XML parser to prevent XML external entity (XXE) attacks, so attackers can have Jenkins parse a crafted XML response that uses external entities for extraction of secrets from the Jenkins controller or server-side request forgery. Additionally, these form validation methods do not require POST requests, resulting in a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability. Nexus Platform Plugin 3.18.1-01 configures its XML parser to prevent XML external entity (XXE) attacks. Additionally, POST requests and Overall/Administer permission are required for the affected HTTP endpoints.
