How to Fix CVE-2023-49081

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Aiohttp dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

aiohttp fixed: 3.9.0
pip install aiohttp>=3.9.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show aiohttp

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2023-49081, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show aiohttp

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Aiohttp in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.9.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show aiohttp command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-20: Improper Input Validation, where the product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. In Aiohttp, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary Improper validation make it possible for an attacker to modify the HTTP request (e.g. to insert a new header) or even create a new HTTP request if the attacker controls the HTTP version. ### Details The vulnerability only occurs if the attacker can control the HTTP version of the request (including its type). For example if an unvalidated JSON value is used as a version and the attacker is then able to pass an array as the `version` parameter. Furthermore, the vulnerability only occurs when the `Connection` header is passed to the `headers` parameter. At this point, the library will use the parsed value to create the request. If a list is passed, then it bypasses validation and it is possible to perform CRLF injection. ### PoC The POC below shows an example of providing an unvalidated array as a version: https://gist.github.com/jnovikov/184afb593d9c2114d77f508e0ccd508e ### Impact CRLF injection leading to Request Smuggling. ### Workaround If these specific conditions are met and you are unable to upgrade, then validate the user input to the `version` parameter to ensure it is a `str`. Patch: https://github.com/aio-libs/aiohttp/pull/7835/files
