How to Fix CVE-2023-46733

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Symfony/security http dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

symfony/security-http fixed: 5.4.31
Upgrade symfony/security-http to 5.4.31
symfony/security-http fixed: 6.3.8
Upgrade symfony/security-http to 6.3.8
symfony/symfony fixed: 5.4.31
Upgrade symfony/symfony to 5.4.31
symfony/symfony fixed: 6.3.8
Upgrade symfony/symfony to 6.3.8
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for symfony/security-http

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2023-46733, inspect your project dependencies for Symfony/security http:

inspect dependencies for symfony/security-http

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Symfony/security http in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.4.31), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-384: Session Fixation, where authenticating a user, or otherwise establishing a new user session, without invalidating any existing session identifier gives an attacker the opportunity to steal authenticated sessions. In Symfony/security http, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Description SessionStrategyListener does not always migrate the session after a successful login. It only migrate the session when the logged-in user identifier changes. In some use cases, the user identifier doesn't change between the verification phase and the successful login, while the token itself changes from one type (partially-authenticated) to another (fully-authenticated). When this happens, the session id should be regenerated to prevent possible session fixations. ### Resolution Symfony now checks the type of the token in addition to the user identifier before deciding whether the session id should be regenerated. The patch for this issue is available [here](https://github.com/symfony/symfony/commit/dc356499d5ceb86f7cf2b4c7f032eca97061ed74) for branch 5.4. ### Credits We would like to thank Robert Meijers for reporting the issue and providing the fix.
