How to Fix CVE-2022-46181

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/gotify/server dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/gotify/server fixed: 2.2.2
Upgrade github.com/gotify/server to 2.2.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/gotify/server

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-46181, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/gotify/server:

inspect dependencies for github.com/gotify/server

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/gotify/server in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.2.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting'), where the product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. In Github.com/gotify/server, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The XSS vulnerability allows authenticated users to upload .html files. With that, an attacker could execute client side scripts **if** another user opened a link, such as: ``` https://push.example.org/image/[alphanumeric string].html ``` An attacker could potentially take over the account of the user that clicked the link. Keep in mind, the Gotify UI won't natively expose such a malicious link, so an attacker has to get the user to open the malicious link in a context outside of Gotify. ### Patches The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.2.2. ### Workarounds You can block access to non image files via a reverse proxy in the `./image` directory. ### References https://github.com/gotify/server/pull/534 https://github.com/gotify/server/pull/535 --- Thanks to rickshang (aka 无在无不在) for discovering and reporting this bug.
