How to Fix CVE-2022-41226

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Compuware common configuration dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

com.compuware.jenkins:compuware-common-configuration fixed: 1.0.15
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.compuware.jenkins</groupId>
    <artifactId>compuware-common-configuration</artifactId>
    <version>1.0.15</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.compuware.jenkins

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2022-41226, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.compuware.jenkins

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Compuware common configuration in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.0.15), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.compuware.jenkins command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-611: Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference, where the product processes an xml document that can contain xml entities with uris that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. In Compuware common configuration, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Jenkins Compuware Common Configuration Plugin 1.0.14 and earlier does not configure its XML parser to prevent XML external entity (XXE) attacks. This allows attackers able to change the contents of the Topaz Workbench CLI home directory on agents to have Jenkins parse a crafted file that uses external entities for extraction of secrets from the Jenkins controller or server-side request forgery.
