How to Fix CVE-2022-35961

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected @openzeppelin/contracts dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

@openzeppelin/contracts fixed: 4.7.3
npm install @openzeppelin/contracts@4.7.3
@openzeppelin/contracts-upgradeable fixed: 4.7.3
npm install @openzeppelin/contracts-upgradeable@4.7.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls @openzeppelin/contracts

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2022-35961, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls @openzeppelin/contracts

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of @openzeppelin/contracts in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.7.3), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls @openzeppelin/contracts command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-354: Improper Validation of Integrity Check Value, where the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the integrity check values or "checksums" of a message. this may prevent it from detecting if the data has been modified or corrupted in transmission. In @openzeppelin/contracts, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The functions `ECDSA.recover` and `ECDSA.tryRecover` are vulnerable to a kind of signature malleability due to accepting EIP-2098 compact signatures in addition to the traditional 65 byte signature format. This is only an issue for the functions that take a single `bytes` argument, and not the functions that take `r, v, s` or `r, vs` as separate arguments. The potentially affected contracts are those that implement signature reuse or replay protection by marking the signature itself as used rather than the signed message or a nonce included in it. A user may take a signature that has already been submitted, submit it again in a different form, and bypass this protection. ### Patches The issue has been patched in 4.7.3. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory, or need assistance deploying a fix, email us at [security@openzeppelin.com](mailto:security@openzeppelin.com).
