How to Fix CVE-2022-23633

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Actionpack dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

actionpack fixed: 5.2.6.2
Upgrade actionpack to 5.2.6.2
actionpack fixed: 6.0.4.6
Upgrade actionpack to 6.0.4.6
actionpack fixed: 6.1.4.6
Upgrade actionpack to 6.1.4.6
actionpack fixed: 7.0.2.2
Upgrade actionpack to 7.0.2.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for actionpack

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-23633, inspect your project dependencies for Actionpack:

inspect dependencies for actionpack

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Actionpack in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.2.6.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-212: Improper Removal of Sensitive Information Before Storage or Transfer, where the product stores, transfers, or shares a resource that contains sensitive information, but it does not properly remove that information before the product makes the resource available to unauthorized actors. In Actionpack, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Under certain circumstances response bodies will not be closed, for example a [bug in a webserver](https://github.com/puma/puma/pull/2812) or a bug in a Rack middleware. In the event a response is *not* notified of a `close`, `ActionDispatch::Executor` will not know to reset thread local state for the next request. This can lead to data being leaked to subsequent requests, especially when interacting with `ActiveSupport::CurrentAttributes`. Upgrading to the FIXED versions of Rails will ensure mitigation of this issue even in the context of a buggy webserver or middleware implementation. ### Patches This has been fixed in Rails 7.0.2.2, 6.1.4.6, 6.0.4.6, and 5.2.6.2. ### Workarounds Upgrading is highly recommended, but to work around this problem the following middleware can be used: ```ruby class GuardedExecutor < ActionDispatch::Executor def call(env) ensure_completed! super end private def ensure_completed! @executor.new.complete! if @executor.active? end end # Ensure the guard is inserted before ActionDispatch::Executor Rails.application.configure do config.middleware.swap ActionDispatch::Executor, GuardedExecutor, executor end ```
