How to Fix CVE-2021-32685

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Tenvoy dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

tenvoy fixed: 7.0.3
npm install tenvoy@7.0.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls tenvoy

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2021-32685, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls tenvoy

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Tenvoy in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 7.0.3), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls tenvoy command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-347: Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature, where the product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. In Tenvoy, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The `verifyWithMessage` method of `tEnvoyNaClSigningKey` always returns `true` for any signature of a SHA-512 hash matching the SHA-512 hash of the message even if the signature is invalid. ### Patches Upgrade to `v7.0.3` immediately to resolve this issue. Since the vulnerability lies within the verification method, the previous signatures are still valid. We highly recommend reverifying any signatures that were previously verified with the vulnerable `verifyWithMessage` method. ### Workarounds In `tenvoy.js` under the `verifyWithMessage` method definition within the `tEnvoyNaClSigningKey` class, ensure that the return statement call to `this.verify` ends in `.verified`. For example, the return statement should start with `return this.verify(signed, password).verified && ` instead of `return this.verify(signed, password) && `. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [github.com/TogaTech/tEnvoy](https://github.com/TogaTech/tEnvoy)
