How to Fix CVE-2021-29430

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Matrix sydent dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

matrix-sydent fixed: 2.3.0
pip install matrix-sydent>=2.3.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show matrix-sydent

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2021-29430, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show matrix-sydent

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Matrix sydent in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.3.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show matrix-sydent command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Matrix sydent, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Sydent does not limit the size of requests it receives from HTTP clients. A malicious user could send an HTTP request with a very large body, leading to disk space exhaustion and denial of service. Sydent also does not limit response size for requests it makes to remote Matrix homeservers. A malicious homeserver could return a very large response, again leading to memory exhaustion and denial of service. This affects any server which accepts registration requests from untrusted clients. ### Patches Patched by 89071a1, 0523511, f56eee3. ### Workarounds Request sizes can be limited in an HTTP reverse-proxy. There are no known workarounds for the problem with overlarge responses. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory, email us at security@matrix.org.
