How to Fix CVE-2020-5249

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Puma dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

puma fixed: 3.12.4
Upgrade puma to 3.12.4
puma fixed: 4.3.3
Upgrade puma to 4.3.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for puma

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2020-5249, inspect your project dependencies for Puma:

inspect dependencies for puma

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Puma in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.12.4), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-113: Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences in HTTP Headers ('HTTP Request/Response Splitting'), where the product receives data from an http agent/component (e.g., web server, proxy, browser, etc.), but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes cr and lf characters before the data is included in outgoing http headers. In Puma, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact If an application using Puma allows untrusted input in an early-hints header, an attacker can use a carriage return character to end the header and inject malicious content, such as additional headers or an entirely new response body. This vulnerability is known as [HTTP Response Splitting](https://owasp.org/www-community/attacks/HTTP_Response_Splitting). While not an attack in itself, response splitting is a vector for several other attacks, such as cross-site scripting (XSS). This is related to [CVE-2020-5247](https://github.com/puma/puma/security/advisories/GHSA-84j7-475p-hp8v), which fixed this vulnerability but only for regular responses. ### Patches This has been fixed in 4.3.3 and 3.12.4. ### Workarounds Users can not allow untrusted/user input in the Early Hints response header. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [puma](https://github.com/puma/puma) * Email us a project maintainer.
