How to Fix CVE-2020-26241

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/ethereum/go ethereum dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum fixed: 1.9.17
Upgrade github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum to 1.9.17
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2020-26241, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/ethereum/go ethereum:

inspect dependencies for github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/ethereum/go ethereum in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.9.17), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-682: Incorrect Calculation, where the product performs a calculation that generates incorrect or unintended results that are later used in security-critical decisions or resource management. In Github.com/ethereum/go ethereum, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact This is a Consensus vulnerability, which can be used to cause a chain-split where vulnerable nodes reject the canonical chain. Geth’s pre-compiled `dataCopy` (at `0x00...04`) contract did a shallow copy on invocation. An attacker could deploy a contract that - writes `X` to an EVM memory region `R`, - calls `0x00..04` with `R` as an argument, - overwrites `R` to `Y`, - and finally invokes the `RETURNDATACOPY` opcode. When this contract is invoked, a consensus-compliant node would push `X` on the EVM stack, whereas Geth would push `Y`. ### Patches No standalone patches have been made. ### Workarounds Upgrade to `1.9.17` or higher. ### References https://blog.ethereum.org/2020/11/12/geth_security_release/ ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [go-ethereum](https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum) * Email us at [security@ethereum.org](mailto:security@ethereum.org)
