CVE-2020-2301: Active directory Authentication Cache Vulnerability
CRITICALCVE-2020-2301 is a CRITICAL (CVSS 9.8) authentication cache vulnerability (CWE-287: Improper Authentication) affecting Active directory libraries in the Maven ecosystem. The issue involves authentication cache in active directory jenkins plugin allows logging in with any password. Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 2.20, 2.16.1.
CVE-2020-2301 at a Glance
Security Impact
CVSS: 9.8
The security impact metrics below are parsed directly from the CVSS v3.1 vector string (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
How to Fix CVE-2020-2301
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Active directory dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jenkins-ci.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>active-directory</artifactId>
<version>2.20</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jenkins-ci.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>active-directory</artifactId>
<version>2.16.1</version>
</dependency>
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2020-2301, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:
mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Active directory in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.20), your application is affected.
Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-287: Improper Authentication, where when an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. In Active directory, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"details" : "Jenkins Active Directory Plugin implements two separate modes: Integration with ADSI on Windows, and an OS agnostic LDAP-based mode. Optionally, to reduce lookup time, a cache can be configured to remember user lookups and user authentications.\n\nIn Active Directory Plugin prior to 2.20 and 2.16.1, when run in Windows/ADSI mode, the provided password was not used when looking up an applicable cache entry. This allows attackers to log in as any user using any password while a successful authentication of that user is still in the cache.\n\nAs a workaround for this issue, the cache can be disabled.\n\nActive Directory Plugin 2.20 and 2.16.1 includes the provided password in cache entry lookup.\n\nAdditionally, the Java system property `hudson.plugins.active_directory.CacheUtil.noCacheAuth` can be set to `true` to no longer cache user authentications.",
