How to Fix CVE-2019-11245

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected K8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet fixed: 1.14.3
Upgrade k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet to 1.14.3
k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet fixed: 1.13.7
Upgrade k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet to 1.13.7
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2019-11245, inspect your project dependencies for K8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet:

inspect dependencies for k8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of K8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.14.3), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-703: Improper Check or Handling of Exceptional Conditions, where the product does not properly anticipate or handle exceptional conditions that rarely occur during normal operation of the product. In K8s.io/kubernetes/cmd/kubelet, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In kubelet v1.13.6 and v1.14.2, containers for pods that do not specify an explicit `runAsUser` attempt to run as uid 0 (root) on container restart, or if the image was previously pulled to the node. If the pod specified `mustRunAsNonRoot: true`, the kubelet will refuse to start the container as root. If the pod did not specify `mustRunAsNonRoot: true`, the kubelet will run the container as uid 0.
